Christian Distinctiveness and British Values

Christian Distinctiveness and British Values

As a Church of England High School, our Christian ethos is central in all parts of school life and we are delighted to be judged ‘Outstanding’ in all aspects of our work as a church school.

Our school has a ‘distinctive Christian character’ which ‘has a very significant impact on the daily lives of students’ and has ‘Collective worship’ which is ‘distinctive, inclusive and inspirational’ (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools: February 2018).

British Values, as defined by the government, are democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. All aspects of our provision are underpinned by the Christian values of accomplishment, humility and service and we believe that these school values are reinforced by the British values outlined by the government.

Students at Hutton ‘speak of the very positive effect which worship has on their behaviour, relationships and attitudes’ (SIAMS 2018)

Students are given many opportunities to serve others in the school, including through the newly created Huttonian Award which ‘challenges students to express these values in their academic work and extra-curricular involvement and in their service of others’. (SIAMS 2018)

With regard to our charity work ‘Very considerable sums are raised each year for a range of local, national and international charities’ (SIAMS 2018)

Through our ethos, policies, assemblies and activities we reflect Christian and British values and are responsible for challenging prejudiced or extreme opinions and behaviour ‘resulting in behaviour and relationships being of the very highest order’ (SIAMS 2018)
