English Literature

What do we cover in this subject?

If you enjoy analysing novels, poems, and plays and exploring how they reflect the time and place they were written, this is the course for you. We welcome students who are curious and ready to discuss a variety of texts, which can be challenging in both style and subject. You’ll look at how texts have been received by readers over time and how their meanings have changed.

How is this subject taught?

Lessons focus on reading and discussion, where original ideas and personal interpretations are encouraged. You’ll study a wide range of classic and modern texts, forming your own views while learning from others' perspectives. As part of the A Level, you’ll also do independent study, choosing and analysing texts that inspire you. At the end of the course, you’ll be assessed in two exams.

What are the enrichment opportunities in this subject?

Literature students have plenty of exciting opportunities to explore their interests. You’ll be able to attend theatre visits, listen to guest speakers, and enter writing competitions throughout Sixth Form. You can also help younger students share your love of literature through activities like shared reading. If you enjoy debating, you might want to join the Sixth Form’s Debating Society to develop your critical thinking and argument skills.

Where does this subject lead to after sixth form?

It teaches you to think critically, read complex texts, and express your ideas clearly—skills that are valuable in many careers. You could go into fields like drama, writing, publishing, journalism, marketing, PR, advertising, teaching, business, or law.
