The Huttonian Award
Hutton Church of England Grammar School is a distinctively Christian school and all that we do stems from our Christian beliefs and values. The life and teachings of Jesus are the firm foundations on which our school stands. The Huttonian Award has been specifically designed to help you, building upon the foundations of the Christian faith, to become the best you can be for God and for others.
What is the Huttonian Award?
At the heart of this award is a simple but powerful idea: that Jesus is an inspiring role model for how to live with compassion, courage, and care. He stood up for justice, showed kindness to everyone, especially those in need, and worked towards a better future for all. Whether or not one identifies as Christian, the values Jesus lived by - kindness, fairness, courage, and compassion - are ones we believe everyone can learn from and aspire to.
The Huttonian Award challenges students to reflect on these values and put them into action in their daily lives. It encourages them to push themselves, support those around them, and become a positive influence in their school and wider community.
It’s a demanding and meaningful journey, and not everyone will receive the award—but every student will be supported and encouraged along the way. The experience is designed to help them grow as individuals and build a stronger, more compassionate school community.
Thank you for supporting your son as he takes on this important challenge.
What does a pupil need to do?
Show Koinonia – Community in Action
Students are encouraged to show a spirit of togetherness and belonging by joining clubs, participating in extracurricular activities, and volunteering their time to help others. Whether it’s supporting a school event or lending a hand in the local community, this is about building relationships and working as part of something bigger than themselves.
Become a Revolutionary Reader
Students will earn their Revolutionary Readers badge by reading and reviewing three books of their choice. This challenge encourages thoughtful reading, critical thinking, and the joy of sharing ideas with others.
Collect Synergy Points
Synergy points are awarded throughout the term for demonstrating our school ethos:
- Readiness – being prepared and engaged
- Resilience – pushing through challenges
- Respectfulness – showing kindness and consideration to others
These small, everyday actions add up to a big impact on our school culture.
Raise Awareness
Students are invited to choose an issue they care about—whether it’s mental health, the environment, equality, or something else—and find a way to raise awareness. This might involve creating a poster campaign, giving a presentation, or organising a small event. It’s about using their voice for good.
Give Back – 5 Hours of Service
To build a sense of responsibility and care for others, each student will complete 5 hours of service. This can be done at school, at home, or a combination of both - examples include helping in the library, tidying shared spaces, supporting a family member, or taking part in a local litter pick.
Complete a Personal Challenge
Every student will set and complete a personal challenge - something that pushes them out of their comfort zone. This might be learning a new skill, overcoming a fear, improving their fitness, or working towards a personal goal.
Not every student will receive the Huttonian Award - it’s a challenge for a reason. But what matters most is the journey: trying new things, serving others, and becoming more self-aware, resilient, and compassionate along the way.
Your support as parents and carers is vital, and we’re excited to see how your sons will grow through this experience.
