Design Technology
What do we cover in this subject?
In Product Design A Level, you’ll build on your GCSE knoweldge and learn how to solve real problems by designing and making things. You’ll do research, sketch ideas, use CAD, make models, and create working prototypes. You’ll also learn about materials, manufacturing, digital tech, and how to spot a market need.
How is this subject taught?
You’ll learn through hands-on projects in a creative workshop. New skills are taught as you go. The course is 50% exam and 50% coursework. The exam is 2.5 hours. The coursework (NEA) is a 40-page design portfolio and a prototype or model of your idea.
By following this course, students will be encouraged to recognise design needs and develop an understanding of how current global issues, including integrating technology, impacts on today’s world.
What are the enrichment opportunities in this subject?
We take part in exciting competitions, including ones run by BAE Systems. We also have strong links with Manchester Metropolitan University, where students get the chance to visit, take part in hands-on workshops, and use industry standard equipment.
When possible, we run trips tailored to your NEA project, helping you explore real-world examples and strengthen your design portfolio with live, practical experiences.
What can it lead to after Sixth Form?
This course can lead to careers or uni courses in design, architecture, engineering, CAD, advertising, marketing and more. Past students have gone to to study architecture, town planning, and engineering amoung other careers.
