What do we coved in this subject?

In this course, you'll explore a range of literary and language topics, covering all three genres of prose, poetry and drama, whilst also encountering a wide range of nonfiction. Students will read both modern and classic texts, chosen for their challenging style and themes. You'll also dive into how speech is used and represented in different forms of communication.

 

How is this subject taught?

Lessons are interactive and discussion-based, encouraging you to think independently and share ideas. You'll also carry out independent study, choosing and analyzing texts that inspire you personally. At the end of the course, you'll sit two A level exams to assess your learning.

 

What are the enrichment opportunities in this subject?

As an English Language and Literature student, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to deepen your interest and prepare you for the future. You can take part in theatre visits, hear from guest speakers, enter writing competitions, and work with younger students to share your passion for literature. You may also enjoy joining the Debating Society, which helps you develop strong, critical arguments.

A Level English opens doors to many university courses and is a great choice alongside other subjects. It helps you develop skills like analytical thinking, reading complex texts, and expressing your ideas clearly - skills valued in many careers. You could go into fields like drama, writing, publishing, journalism, marketing, PR, advertising, teaching, or even business and law.
