Further Maths

What do we cover in this subject?

If you enjoy Maths and want to take it further, you can study Further Maths alongside your A Level Maths. You’ll dive deeper into three main areas: Pure Maths, Mechanics, and Statistics.

  • In Pure Maths, you’ll explore interesting topics like complex numbers, calculus, matrices, vectors, polar coordinates, and more. Some of it might be new to you, and it’s great preparation for university-level maths.

  • In Mechanics, you’ll look at how forces and motion work, covering things like momentum, energy, circular motion and how objects balance.

  • In Statistics, you’ll learn how to analyse data and deal with probability, covering ideas like random variables, Poisson distribution, confidence intervals, and more

How is this subject taught?

You’ll have two teachers – one teaches Pure and Mechanics, and the other teaches Pure and Statistics. Lessons mix explanations, worked examples, note-taking, discussions, and activities where you learn by doing. Lessons are usually in small groups, so there’s lots of time for personal help. You’ll be tested at the end of each topic and will have formal assessments throughout the year.

The course follows the AQA exam board, you will sit an AS exam at the end of year 12 and your A level exam at the end of year 13.

What are the enrichment opportunities in this subject?

If you take Further Maths, there are some great extras to get involved in:

  • Help out younger students with the Axiom Maths program

  • Take part in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge

  • Compete in a team maths competition at Lancaster University

  • Try the Ritangle maths challenge and go to problem-solving workshops

Where does this subject lead to after Sixth Form?

Further Maths is a highly respected subject, especially by top universities. Taking it shows that you’re not only confident with Maths, but also willing to challenge yourself with advanced topics.

If you’re thinking about a degree in Maths, Engineering, Physics, Computing, or Data Science, Further Maths is a huge advantage. In fact, many STEM courses at Oxford, Cambridge and other top universities either require it or strongly prefer it. Even for courses that don’t ask for it, having Further Maths on your application can help you stand out and may lead to lower entry offers from some universities.
