Music
What topics are covered in this subject?
The Music A Level is divided into three main areas:
-
Appraising Music – In this area, you’ll explore music from all sorts of genres, from Beethoven to Muse, Classical to Broadway Musicals, and everything in between.
-
Performance – This is where you’ll focus on shaping and improving your own personal performance.
-
Composition – Here, you’ll learn how music is put together, looking at techniques and then using them to create your own compositions.
How is this subject taught?
Lessons are a mix of theory and practical work. You’ll have time in class to work on your portfolio and will need to practice your instrument for the performance parts of the course.
You’ll be assessed in all three areas: Appraising Music is tested through a listening exam. For Composition, you’ll need to complete two pieces – one that you create freely and one to a set brief. Your Performance will be assessed by a 10-minute recital at the end of your second year.
What are the enrichment opportunities in this subject?
Music offers a lot of extracurricular activities. There are various music clubs you can join, from bands to vocal groups. Every two years, we put on a big musical, and sixth form students are often key players, whether it’s taking lead roles or performing in the orchestra.
We also run an annual residential weekend, where all the musicians go away for a fun weekend of rehearsals. It’s a great chance to try new things and be creative in a relaxed environment.
