Physics
What do we cover in this subject?
In A Level Physics, you’ll take the ideas you've already met like forces, energy, waves, radioactivity, electricity, and magnetism. You’ll explore these topics in much more detail than at GCSE and start to understand the big scientific principles that explain everything from tiny atoms to massive galaxies. You’ll also discover how physics makes modern technology possible, without it, we wouldn’t have things like games consoles, smartphones, or laptops!
How is this subject taught?
At Hutton, you’ll study physics in well-equipped labs with experienced physics teachers. We follow the AQA A Level Physics course, and you’ll do lots of hands-on experiments, including the ones that AQA requires. You’ll get the chance to improve your problem-solving and practical skills.
Although you don’t have to take A Level Maths to do this course, you’ll need to be confident using maths throughout. Each week, you’ll be given tasks to complete on your own, and your progress will be checked with end-of-topic tests. You’ll also sit mock exams to help you prepare for your final assessments, which include three written papers and a practical skills endorsement.
What are the enrichment opportunities in this subject?
There are lots of enrichment activities to help you explore where physics can take you. You might hear from guest speakers who work in science and engineering, visit local universities, or take part in projects like the ‘Isaac Physics’ programme. Past activities have included learning about the physics behind theme park rides and joining a science expedition.
Where does this subject lead to after Sixth Form?
Physics is a great subject if you’re thinking about a career in science, engineering, or technology. It can lead to jobs in areas like astrophysics, aeronautical engineering, nuclear science, radiography, geophysics, and neuroscience. It can also be useful for careers in software development, architecture, environmental science, and civil engineering. Physics is one of the most respected and flexible A Levels you can take—and the skills you learn will be valuable wherever you go next.
