Religious Studies

What do we cover in this subject?

Religious Studies is a thought-provoking and challenging subject that asks big questions about God, the world, and the meaning of life. You’ll explore different beliefs and ideas, and think deeply about how religion influences people and society. It’s a great subject if you enjoy debating, thinking critically, and looking at different points of view.

You’ll study three main areas:

  • Philosophy of Religion – big questions about the existence of God, life after death, and the nature of reality

  • Ethics – what’s right and wrong, and how we decide

  • New Testament Studies – the historical and spiritual importance of the New Testament

You’ll also build useful skills like debating, analysis, logical thinking, and clear communication—skills that are helpful in lots of other subjects and careers.

How is this subject taught?

You’ll learn through a mix of lessons, debates, group work, discussions, media clips, independent research, and presentations. Lessons are designed to be interactive and thought-provoking, giving you plenty of chances to explore ideas and form your own opinions.

What are the enrichment opportunities in this subject?

The Religious Studies Department offers different enrichment activities each year. We run a trip to Manchester, and regularly provide trips based on students interests. We also invite guest speakers—such as members of the clergy—to come in and help explain complex topics in an engaging way.

Where does this subject lead to after Sixth Form?

Religious Studies is a respected A Level that’s useful for many careers. It helps you learn to think clearly, argue effectively, and understand different viewpoints. These skills are great for jobs in law, politics, journalism, education, medicine, social work, and the public sector. It’s also a strong subject to support university applications, especially for courses in the humanities and social sciences.
