Why Art Matters

Art encourages creativity, imagination and self-expression. Through exploring different artists, cultures and styles, pupils learn how art reflects and shapes the world around us. The subject helps students develop confidence in expressing ideas visually and encourages them to think creatively and independently. Art also helps pupils understand how colour, form, texture and design are used to communicate ideas and emotions.

What Skills Do Pupils Learn?

  • Creative thinking and imagination, exploring their own ideas and artistic style
  • Practical artistic skills, including drawing, painting, printing, sculpture and digital work
  • Observation and visual analysis, studying artists and responding to their work
  • Problem-solving and experimentation, testing different materials and techniques
  • Reflection and evaluation, improving their work through feedback and refinement

How Can Parents Help?

  • Encourage creativity and drawing or making artwork at home
  • Visit galleries, exhibitions or museums together
  • Discuss different types of art seen in books, films or everyday life
  • Support sketchbook work, homework and project development
