Why English matters?

In English at Hutton, we aim to help students become confident readers, writers and speakers. Through studying a wide range of novels, plays, poetry and non-fiction texts, students develop the skills they need to succeed in school, further education and the wider world.

What skills do pupils learn?

Students explore exciting and challenging texts from different time periods and cultures. They learn how writers use language to create meaning and how literature helps us understand the world and different viewpoints.

Alongside reading, students develop their writing skills by producing creative pieces, essays, speeches and real-world writing such as reviews and articles. Speaking and discussion are also a key part of lessons, helping students build confidence and share ideas clearly.

How can parents help

  • Encourage regular reading
  • Discussing the texts studied – ask questions, discuss themes or even watching film and TV adaptations.
  • Help make suitable homework and revision timetables
