Why French Matters
Learning French helps pupils develop communication skills and a deeper understanding of other cultures. It opens opportunities for travel, study and future careers in an increasingly global world. Through learning a language, pupils also gain confidence, resilience and curiosity about different countries and ways of life.
What Skills Do Pupils Learn?
- Listen and understand spoken language in a range of contexts
- Speak confidently and take part in conversations
- Read and understand texts, including stories and authentic materials
- Write clearly in French, expressing ideas and opinions
- Use grammar and vocabulary accurately, including present, past and future tenses
- Understand culture and traditions of French-speaking countries
How Can Parents Help?
Parents can support language learning by:
- Encouraging pupils to practise vocabulary regularly
- Asking them to teach you new words or phrases
- Listening to French music, films or short videos together
- Encouraging curiosity about French culture, food and places
