Why History Matters

History helps pupils understand how the past has shaped the world we live in today. It gives students a broad and coherent knowledge of British history and the wider world, encouraging curiosity about people, societies and events over time. Studying history develops critical thinking, empathy and the ability to understand change, continuity and different perspectives — all skills that help pupils make sense of our diverse society and become well‑rounded individuals.

What skills do pupils learn?

  •  Critical thinking and enquiry - asking perceptive questions about the past.
  • Evidence evaluation - analysing sources and interpretations to make well‑supported judgments.
  • Chronological understanding - placing events in order and understanding long‑term change.
  • Writing and communication - organising ideas clearly in essays and discussions.
  • Historical vocabulary and concepts - using terms like cause and consequence, significance and continuity accurately.

How can parents help?

  •  Encouraging discussions about historical topics pupils are studying.
  • Asking pupils to explain what they’ve learned in their own words.
  • Supporting reading around topics through books, films, documentaries and museum visits.
  • Helping pupils practise organising their ideas and thinking critically about evidence.
