Why PE Matters

Physical Education (PE) at Hutton Grammar School helps pupils develop an appreciation of health, fitness and the benefits of being active for life. The curriculum is diverse and engaging, giving students lots of opportunities to take part in different sports and physical challenges. Pupils can also join extra‑curricular clubs, compete in team and individual activities, and enjoy sports at lunchtime and after school. PE supports pupils’ physical wellbeing and encourages them to lead healthy, active lives now and in the future.

What skills do pupils learn?

  • Physical techniques that improve fitness through taking part in team games and individual activities.
  • Personal and social skills such as teamwork, resilience, determination and leadership.
  • Problem‑solving and decision‑making.
  • The curriculum helps pupils understand how to work safely, respect others and show good sportsmanship.
  • Values such as respect, friendship, perseverance and communication are woven throughout their learning.

How can parents help?

  • Encourage physical activity outside school, whether that’s through sports clubs, family activities or hobbies that involve movement.
  • Talk with your child about what they’ve done in PE and celebrate their achievements.
  • Support pupils in practising new skills and managing their time for homework or training.
  • Promote a positive attitude towards health and fitness, to help pupils enjoy and succeed in PE.
