Why Religious Studies matters?

Religious Studies (RS) helps pupils explore deep questions about life, meaning, belief and morality. It reflects the school’s Christian ethos, rooted in the scripture “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5), and encourages compassion, respect and understanding of others.

RS develops students’ knowledge of Christianity and other world faiths, promotes spiritual and ethical reflection, and equips pupils to engage thoughtfully in a diverse world.

What Skills Pupils Learn

In RS, pupils develop:

  • Critical thinking and reasoning – analysing philosophical and ethical questions.
  • Respectful understanding of beliefs – learning about different religions and worldviews with openness.
  • Communication skills – explaining ideas clearly, debating viewpoints and justifying opinions.
  • Reflection and self-awareness – thinking about their own values, identity and how they relate to others.
  • Awareness of global and cultural diversity – understanding how faith shapes lives and societies.

The curriculum also builds literacy, empathy and ethical judgement, preparing pupils for adult life and diverse communities

How Parents Can Help?

  • Encouraging open conversations about beliefs, values and current ethical issues.
  • Talking about world religions and cultures in everyday life, news or experiences.
  • Supporting reflection and critical thinking by asking pupils to explain their views.
  • Visiting places of worship or cultural events together to deepen understanding.
  • Encouraging respectful listening and discussion of differing perspectives.
