Why Performing Arts Matters

Music and Drama give pupils opportunities to express themselves creatively and build confidence through performance and collaboration. Students explore different musical styles and theatrical techniques while developing an appreciation of the arts. Through composing, performing and creating theatre, pupils learn to communicate ideas, work together and respond creatively to challenges. These subjects help students develop confidence, imagination and an appreciation of culture, while encouraging them to share their work with others.

What skills do pupils learn?

  • Performance skills – singing, playing instruments and acting in front of an audience
  • Creativity and composition – creating music and developing original dramatic performances
  • Collaboration and teamwork – working together to rehearse, perform and improve work
  • Communication and confidence – expressing ideas clearly through performance and discussion
  • Evaluation and reflection – analysing their own work and giving constructive feedback to others

How can parents help?

  • Encouraging pupils to practise instruments, singing or performance skills at home
  • Watching performances, theatre productions or musical events together
  • Talking with pupils about what they have created or performed in lessons
  • Encouraging confidence and creativity in expressing ideas
