Hutton Church of England Grammar School and Sixth Form is a popular, Voluntary Aided comprehensive school situated near Preston. The school admits boys only in Year 7 and there are 672 currently on roll in Years 7-11. Both boys and girls are admitted to the Sixth Form where there are currently 136 students on roll. The school has an excellent reputation.

Students come to Hutton from a wide geographical area across South Ribble, Preston, Chorley and West Lancashire and are from a variety of social, cultural, religious and economic backgrounds. It is common for there to be more than 40 feeder primary schools in a Year 7 intake.

Pupils at Hutton Church of England Grammar school make excellent progress. In key GCSE performance indicators we are well above national and local expectations. This summer, our boys have once again excelled with 77.2% grade 4 and above and 51.7% grade 5 and above in English and Maths. In English, an impressive 83.4% of students achieved grades 9–4, while in Maths 84.1% reached the same benchmark. Like last year, we expect to be one of the top schools in the areas for boys’ attainment and progress.

Quality education is not just about academic results and a broad curriculum. Extra-curricular enrichment and a safe, nurturing environment are just as important. Parents regularly comment in our questionnaires that their children feel safe at school; behaviour is good and students are well looked after by the staff. We are proud of the commitment and dedication that our students show, not only in their studies, but in extra-curricular activities and raising funds for charitable causes.

We have a reputation nationally for our competitive prowess in traditional sports such as rugby, cricket and athletics and we aim to give all students an appetite for participating in physical activity as part of a healthy and happy life.

We also have thriving music and drama departments, giving students the opportunity to share their talents in our regular concerts and musical theatre productions. Clubs and activities on offer include choir, band, jazz band, rock school and musical theatre group.

Students can join a wide variety of clubs including chess club, gardening club, games club, film-making club, war-hammer club or science club. The Art rooms are open at lunch times for students to work. There is also a homework club or they can go to the Library to sit and read or to play chess, draughts or scrabble.

Students regularly raise funds for charitable causes. Some of the charities that we have supported in the last year include: St Catherine’s Hospice; Local food banks; the North West Air Ambulance Service; the SPACE centre; Children In Need; Movember; Samaritan’s Purse (Operation Christmas Child); Help for Heroes; Motor Neurone Disease Association; Reuben’s Retreat; Genetic Disorders UK (Jeans for Genes); the RSPCA and Galloway’s Society for the Blind.

Students also play an active role in decision making and plans for school improvement through the School Council and Sixth Form Council.
